Bonedi Bari Durga Puja · Kolkata & Howrahবনেদি বাড়ির দুর্গাপুজো · কলকাতা ও হাওড়া

In the old houses, the Goddess still comes home to the courtyard.

পুরোনো বাড়ির উঠোনে আজও মা আসেন।

UTHON is a record of family Pujas kept the way they have always been kept — in thakurdalans and courtyards, by the people whose homes they belong to. Walk through the house below.

A typical Bonedi Bari plan, drawn for orientation. Each house is different.

What is UTHONউঠোন কী

In an old Bengali house, the uthon is the open courtyard at its centre. It is where the household gathers, where the Goddess is received each autumn, and where the year’s Puja is remembered long after the immersion.

UTHON gathers what these families choose to share — photographs, rituals, the bhog cooked in their kitchens, the history of each house — so that children, grandchildren and relatives far from Bengal can find it in one place. Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021; the family Pujas are among its oldest roots.

Ashtami

Kumari Pujaকুমারী পুজো

A young girl is worshipped as a living form of the Goddess. She is dressed, adorned and seated before the family, who offer her the reverence given to the pratima.

Between Ashtami and Navami

Sandhi Pujaসন্ধিপুজো

Performed in the brief juncture where one day passes into the next. Many houses mark it with one hundred and eight lamps and one hundred and eight lotuses, offered in near silence.

Ashtami or Navami, by family custom

Dhuno Poranoধুনো পোড়ানো

Devotees, often women of the household, sit before the Goddess holding earthen vessels of burning dhuno — resin — as a vow or a prayer for someone they love.

Dashami

Sindoor Khelaসিঁদুর খেলা

Before the immersion, married women offer sindoor to the Goddess and then to one another. It is a farewell, and in many houses the quietest hour of the Puja.

Each family keeps these observances in its own way; family pages record them as the family describes them.
